Questions
What is Star Battle?
A logic puzzle on a square grid split into regions. You place stars so every row, column and region holds the same number, and no two stars touch.
Is it the same as Two Not Touch or Queens?
Yes, the rules are the same family. Two Not Touch is the name The New York Times uses for the two-star 10×10 version. Queens on LinkedIn is the one-star version. We are not affiliated with either. Read about Two Not Touch or compare Queens and Star Battle.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every puzzle on this site is free to play in your browser, with no account and no download. Your progress stays in your browser.
Will I ever have to guess?
Never. Every puzzle here has exactly one solution, and our solver has confirmed that it can be finished by logic alone. If you are stuck, the Hint button shows the next logical move and explains why it works.
What grid sizes can I play?
Four levels: Beginner 5×5 with one star per line, Intermediate 8×8 with one star, Advanced 10×10 with two stars, and Expert 14×14 with three stars. Each level comes in Easy, Medium and Hard. See all puzzles.
Is there an app?
An iPhone and iPad app is in the works, with offline play and every constellation kept in your Atlas. Until then, the site works well on a phone. More about the app.
What are the rules of Star Battle?
Place stars so every row, column and region holds the same number of stars, and no two stars touch, not even diagonally. See the rules with pictures.
When does the daily puzzle change?
At midnight on your device. Everyone gets the same puzzle for the same date, and earlier days stay free to play from the Play page.
Why are there four puzzles a day?
The main daily is a 10×10 with two stars. Each date also has a 5×5, an 8×8 and a 14×14, so you can warm up or take on something bigger. They use the same difficulty: Monday and Tuesday are easy, Wednesday to Friday are medium, and the weekend is hard.
How do the difficulty levels work?
We solve each puzzle by computer using human-style logic and grade it by the hardest move it needs. Easy puzzles only need direct moves. Medium puzzles add moves that look across a line. Hard puzzles need counting across groups of lines.
What is the Atlas?
When you finish a puzzle, its stars connect into a constellation with its own name. Your Atlas keeps every sky you have earned, along with your streak.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up. Your progress, stats and Atlas are stored in your browser, so clearing your browser data will remove them.
Do you use cookies or trackers?
No. The site uses no tracking cookies and no analytics scripts. Read the privacy page.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. Tap to place a star and press and hold to mark a cell. It works in any modern phone, tablet or desktop browser.
Is there a keyboard mode?
Yes. Use the arrow keys to move, S to place a star, X to mark, Backspace to erase, H for a hint, and Cmd or Ctrl + Z to undo.
Who makes the puzzles?
We generate them with our own software and check each one with a solver, which confirms that it has exactly one solution and can be finished by logic alone. More about how they are made.
